Beltane Overnight Camp! Wednesday 30th April

Sent: 2008-04-24 13:40:03

Hi folks,

Beltane is the Pagan celebration marking the beginning of Summertime (or at least the hopes of it!) and the definite warmth that has returned to the earth. It is a festival of joy, passion, and fun, focusing on themes of sexuality, fertility, partnership, love, and laughter. Traditional activities for Beltane, celebrated in the British Isles from at least 100-500 AD, include dancing round the Maypole, going "A-Maying" in the woods, jumping the Bel Fire for good luck, and have a jolly good time. And maybe every now and then burning a Christian policeman in a giant wicker man. (If you don't get that joke, watch the original Wicker Man film...)

To mark this Summer festival, the Pagan Society will be having an overnight campout in Tongwynlais, in the forest surrounding Castell Coch, on Wednesday 30th April.  We plan to have a nice roaring Bel Fire, plenty of BBQ food, and alcoholic substances to quench our thirst. If you fancy joining us, please meet us outside the gates to the Humanities block on Colum Road at 16:30pm (actually by the road, not by the entrance to the building.) We'll travel to Tongwynlais by bus, which is a roughly 20-minute journey and won't cost you more than £2 each way. Unless you want to sleep under the stars that night, please bring a tent and sleeping bag, and we also ask that you bring along some food to add to the feast (BBQ-able food, crisps, other stuff that is easy to take camping) and of course some drink - whether it be alcoholic or soft. If you can afford it, a disposable BBQ would be handy as well. I also recommend that you wear suitable shoes - the walk to our campsite is uphill, though a pleasant one nonetheless.

At some point during the evening, after setting up camp, we will most probably hold a Beltane ritual, but this will be impromptu and can be created by those present - there is no plan for it (very apt for Beltane!)

So, hopefully see you at 16:30pm, outside the Humanities block gates on Colum Road, on Wednesday 30th April, for some Beltane-y fun and goodness!

Blessings,

Kim Huggens
