Stonehenge and Avebury day tripSent: 2008-02-13 11:00:02Hi all,Our most popular trip every year is our hop over to Wiltshire to see some of the most celebrated and beloved stones in the world. This year, our Stonehenge and Avebury day trip will be on Saturday 15 March. Stonehenge is world-famous, and rightly so - huge towers of stone, rising from Salisbury Plain to meet the sky and greet each solstice at the sun's rise. Though most visitors must wonder at the sacred architecture of the ancients from behind a rope, the Pagan Society will be booking an afternoon slot for private viewing - our members will be able to stroll past the rope like VIPs and experience the majesty of Stonehenge from within the circle itself. Another favourite site of ours is the massive stone circle at Avebury, a collection of monoliths so large it encompasses an entire village. Avebury is popular with Pagans, hippies, New Agers and even regular tourists alike, and on some occasions we've had the good fortune to bump into an open ritual or a local Pagan moot there. We'll be there for lunchtime, and have a Pagan picnic on the grass within the stones. The Red Lion Pub will also be available if people would prefer to buy a meal - or if the English weather decides that precipitation is the order of the day... The plan is to set off from Cardiff at around 9.30am, to arrive at Avebury for a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we might look up some other local sites of interest, and then arrive at Stonehenge for the private viewing session 4.30 - 5.30 pm. We should be back in Cardiff around 7.30pm. Private access tickets cost £12 each (£10 for English Heritage members), and we'll share the cost of petrol for the day, which shouldn't come to more than £5. As usual, non-students are welcome. (If the trip fills, priority has to be given to our student members as we are using the student union's free minibus, but please don't let this put you off!) If you'd like to come, please drop me an email on andy@cardiffpagan.co.uk, preferably before Wednesday 20 February as I need to finalise numbers with English Heritage and pay a deposit. Please include the following details: your full name and contact number, name and number of emergency contact. I will also need your £12 entry fee for Stonehenge (or £10 if you are an English Heritage member). (If you are really stretched for cash, I can accept the £6 deposit now and the remaining £6 on the day. The £6 deposit is non-refundable according English Heritage.) So, please join us for sacred monuments and a fantastic and fun day out! Blessings, Andy Holland |
